Allergies in
Fresno, CA

Explore how residents of Central California are impacted by allergies and what you can do about it.

Allergy reactions often strike at the most inopportune times. Knowing what can cause a reaction, employing preventative measures and having treatments on hand specific to your needs can help ensure you and your family continue to live every day to its fullest.

When an allergen has entered the body, the body defends itself by releasing a chemical called histamine, which can result in common reactions like sneezing, a runny nose, watery eyes, or in more severe cases – hives, difficulty breathing and anaphylaxis. Allergies can be seasonal, or an allergic reaction can also happen year-round, depending on its cause.

Allergy Testing & Treatment in Fresno, CA

Do you suffer from Asthma in Central California? Dr. Buddiga is an asthma specialist dedicated to helping test and treat the symptoms of asthma in patients like you.

Testing

  • Skin Testing

Whether you suffer from a reaction to foods, chemicals or the environment, we can often diagnose the allergy with scratch or patch testing. Scratch tests assess allergies to foods, stinging insects and airborne allergens by scratching the surface of the skin with a few drops of purified allergen. Patch tests can identify allergies to skin irritants like cosmetics and chemicals by applying the allergen directly to a patch of skin. If a delayed reaction occurs in the next 72 hours, we can identify the culprit allergen and recommend the best course of treatment for your allergies.

  • Nasal Endoscopy

We perform nasal endoscopies for various sinus symptoms. After spraying local anesthetic on the area, a small fiber optic camera is eased into the nasal passage. The camera enables us to examine and diagnose visible conditions affecting the nasal passages, sinuses, throat and vocal cords as well as to evaluate any polyps. A small amount of fluid may be collected to test for abnormal microorganism growth, so we can prescribe the best treatment for relief.

Allergy FAQ's

  • What are the predominant allergies in Fresno

Allergies to trees such as Olive tree, Sycamore, Juniper, Elm & Oak.

Allergies to grass such as Bermuda, Fescue, Perennial Rye, Timothy & Kentucky Bluegrass

Allergies to Short / Long Ragweed and Nettle are also observed in the Fall/ Autumn season.

  • What are allergy shots and who should get them?

Allergy shots help your body develop a natural resistance to allergens by strengthening immunity against the effects of tree, grass, weed pollen, dust mites, animal dander, mold and stinging insects.

You may benefit from allergy shots if you:

    • Have symptoms that are not well controlled with allergy medication.
    • Have side effects from allergy medications, such as drowsiness.
    • Want to decrease oral medication use.
    • Have severe reactions to flying stinging insects such as bees, wasps and hornets.
    • Have allergic triggers that cannot be avoided, such as pets, pollen and dust.
    • Want to spend more time outdoors.
    • Want a proven method to control allergies long-term by strengthening your immune system for potential triggers.
  • How much do allergy shots cost?

Most insurance plans cover the cost of medicine preparation and weekly shot administration. Some insurances cover a significant portion of the cost; however some plans may require a copayment or deductible to be met. This is dependent on your insurance plan.

We highly recommend you contact your insurance plan to learn more about your benefits. As a courtesy we usually do our best to confirm service coverage with your insurance provider and give you an estimated cost before any commitment to allergy shot treatment.

  • Do allergy shots help my child?

Yes, allergy shots are very effective in children because treatment is proven to prevent the development of new allergies and asthma as well as stabilization and improved control of these conditions. Allergy shots are typically started after a child reaches five years of age, but they may be started earlier on a case-by-case basis.

  • Are allergy shots safe?

Yes, allergy shots are typically safe. A minor reaction may happen at the injection site, which usually improves with time. The risk of a severe allergic reaction is rare but possible and may include a serious, life-threatening reaction. The reaction typically responds immediately to epinephrine when injected in a timely fashion, therefore we kindly request you wait for 30 minutes after every injection and let us know immediately if you are having any problems so that we may assist as quickly as possible. We also recommend you use the restroom prior to your injection. Your safety is our greatest priority, which is why we follow strict preventive safety measures.

  • Do allergy shots help with any other conditions, such as asthma control?

Yes, since asthma is primarily an allergic problem, a regular shot regimen in addition to your regular maintenance inhaler should significantly help control this condition, resulting in a healthy and productive lifestyle with less school and work time loss.

Allergy shots have also been FDA approved for skin eczema control and allergic eyes, due to triggers like pollen, dust and pet allergen.

  • Do you offer allergy drops?

Yes, we offer oral allergy drops that can be administered daily from the comfort of your home, underneath the tongue to achieve similar results. This treatment is not covered by insurances due to lack of FDA approval and is currently an out-of-pocket expense. Although it is used extensively in Europe & Canada with excellent results, more clinical studies are needed in the United States.
