Dr. Buddiga takes a comprehensive approach to diagnosis, examining all of the factors that may influence your health and the health of your skin and immune system. Diagnosis may include history and physical examination, skin allergen testing, blood testing, genetic testing, and more. SkinImmune™ Diagnosis reveals the precise picture of your health status.
From diagnosis, Dr. Buddiga creates a unique SkinImmune™ Treatment Plan. Each treatment plan is unique based on your exact needs, but may include topical, oral, and injected medications. Dr. Buddiga may work with your other healthcare providers to optimize your overall health and wellness.
Once the skin has responded favorably to treatment, it is ready for SkinImmune™ Enhancement. SkinImmune™ Enhancement begins with a consultation with Dr. Buddiga, who will discuss your aesthetic and anti-aging goals. Dr. Buddiga will then help you design and implement a SkinImmune™ Enhancement Plan that may include plasma skin resurfacing, laser hair removal, dermal fillers, lip fillers, and facial neuromodulators, e.g., Botox.
Your skin’s health and appearance are affected by many things, both internal and external. Your skin is affected by your diet, hydration, and your inner hormonal and metabolic states. Your skin is home to over 1000 species of bacteria—more than one trillion microorganisms. This so-called skin microbiome affects both the health of your skin and the health of your body. Your skin is also affected by your exposome, the combination of exposures to sunlight, air pollutants, and chemical toxins. Harmful Ultraviolet A and B light—UVA and UVB— cause photoaging, dark spots, DNA damage, and increase the risk for skin cancer. Pollutants in the air that can damage skin include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, heavy metals, carbon monoxide, nitric oxides, sulfur oxide, and ozone.
Physicians have known for decades that the skin is not only the biggest organ of the body, it is also the biggest organ of the immune system. The skin has a vibrant network of blood and lymphatic vessels that transport cells of the immune system including lymphocytes, migrant leukocytes, mast cells, and macrophages. The skin is also the permanent home of some very specialized immune system cells. Langerhans cells are skin immune cells that “swallow” potentially harmful substances, break them apart, and use the pieces to warn other immune cells about the invader, i.e., macrophage-like, antigen-presenting cells. Keratinocytes, dendritic cells, epidermotropic lymphocytes, and melanocytes in skin all have a role to play in the skin immune system. When it is healthy, the skin immune system is constantly surveilling the skin for foreign invaders and is ready to call for immune system reinforcements when it is time to neutralize the threat.
Dr. Buddiga created SkinImmune™ as a way to consider the skin and immune system in all of its complexity. Perhaps the best way to explain SkinImmune™ is to describe one patient’s experience. ML is a 45-year-old woman with Type 2 diabetes, asthma, and eczema. ML came to see Dr. Buddiga because she wanted Botox and a dermal filler to reverse the look of frown lines. When Dr. Buddiga examined ML’s skin, he found that it was dehydrated, irritated, and inflamed. While many medical spas may simply provide the requested aesthetic treatment, ML’s skin was so fragile and unwell that Dr. Buddiga knew this would be unwise. Instead, Dr. Buddiga recommended to delay aesthetic treatments until the woman’s health and skin conditions could be properly treated. Dr. Buddiga worked with the woman’s endocrinologist to adjust her diabetes medications and bring ML’s blood sugars under better control. He also recommended several dietary and hydration changes that are more skin-friendly. Skin allergen testing revealed one moderate allergy and one severe allergy that ML did not know she had. Dr. Buddiga was also able to get ML’s eczema under control—something she was unable to accomplish with other physicians.
Three months after her initial consultation, ML’s skin looked much healthier. In fact, the woman’s overall health had improved. It turns out, she really didn’t need a dermal filler after all. After discussing the woman’s aesthetic goals, Dr. Buddiga prescribed Hydrafacial™ MD Elite and one round of treatments with a facial neuromodulator. ML was extremely satisfied with the visible results. In addition, because of the changes to her diet and medications, ML felt healthier than she had in years!
